CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Area Transit System has officially announced the name of its upcoming South End light rail station. Interim CATS CEO Brent Cagle revealed the new stop will be called Atherton Mill Station. The name honors the historic textile mill nearby, which was the first fact ory built in Dilworth over a century ago. Transit leaders also celebrated the opening of a new pedestrian rail crossing in the area to improve pedestrian safety. Cagle says, “It improves safety, accessibility, and convenience for everyone traveling through South End, whether you’re walking, biking, or using transit.” Transit and economic development officials say the project is a vital piece of infrastructure to manage South End’s rapid growth without forcing neighbors into cars.
