A man was convicted in a West Philadelphia mass shooting during a block party two years ago that left three people dead and six others hurt. On Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced the conviction of 30-year-old Tahir Shoatz on charges of third-degree murd er, attempted murder, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying firearms in public, recklessly endangering another person and other related offenses. On July 21, 2024, Shoatz was involved in an argument with Akil Jones during a block party along the 1200 block of North Alden Street in West Philadelphia. Surveillance footage from a Ring camera showed the argument turned physical and Shoatz reached for a gun concealed in his waistband. Akil Jones’ brother, Amir Jones, then came to his brother’s aid moments before Shoatz opened fire. The footage showed Shoatz firing his gun a second time and shooting Akil Jones’ friend Sekayi Robinson. Other gunmen at the block party also opened fire. Investigators determined at least six guns in all were fired during the incident. In the end, Akil Jones, his brother Rashie Jones and Robinson were all killed in the shooting. Six people, including Shoatz and Amir Jones, were injured in the shooting. While officials determined Shoatz killed Robinson and tried to kill Amir Jones, he was acquitted of murder for the deaths of Akil and Rashie Jones after investigators determined he did not fire the shots that killed them. “This was a senseless and horrific act that led to dozens of shots being fired at a crowded event, causing terror and trauma for all those in the surrounding area,” Krasner said. “It is a reminder that despite the continued improvements in public safety Philadelphia has experienced over the last three years that the reckless actions of a few can endanger many. I want to thank Assistant District Attorney Cydney Pope for her excellent work on this case in achieving a verdict that will keep Tahir Shoatz in prison for many years.” The District Attorney’s Office has not yet revealed Shoatz’s sentencing date.
