Photo Credit: Philadelphia Youth Basketball The planned facility will be just steps away from PYB’s Alan Horowitz “Sixth Man” Center – a 100,000-square-foot basketball and youth engagement facility in the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia. PYB participants like Amin Ray have participated in all the programs available at the “Sixth Man” Center. Ray, who is turning 18 years old, has been given options through the programming offered through the current facility. “We’re constantly told to be successful, constantly told to build a future. But sometimes nobody shows us what that future could look like,” Ray said. “The Varsity Trades Academy did just that for me.” At the project’s announcement, Gov. Josh Shapiro revealed that Pennsylvania, through his administration, has invested $1.5 million towards the project’s $50 million price tag. “Whether you go to college, you go to the military, you go to a union training hall. All of those pathways deserve our respect, and all of them deserve our investment,” Shapiro said.
