Eighty days after emergency room nurse Angelica Brophy disappeared, new investigative details are emerging about the search for the wife and mother of two. Private investigator Anthony Campbell, who was hired by Kaiser Permanente nurses who worked with Brophy, spoke on camera recently about the c ase for the first time. Campbell said he believes Brophy, 44, is still on Palomar Mountain. Brophy’s car was found at Palomar Mountain Park. “The reason why everything was left in the car, and the way it was left, it was more a goodbye,” Campbell said. Campbell later resigned as a private investigator on the case but continued assisting as a volunteer. “I didn’t want to upset the family, so I did step down and became a volunteer,“ he said. A law enforcement source close to the case also provided NBC 7 with details about what investigators have examined, including Brophy’s marriage, her past and gambling. According to a timeline on the family’s website, Brophy visited two casinos on the day she went missing. Campbell said he learned more about Brophy’s gambling while investigating her disappearance. “An employee at Harrah’s Casino said she was a high-tier gambler and there every other day to get her free chips to gamble that day,“ Campbell said. The same law enforcement source said investigators looked into difficulties in Brophy’s marriage to her husband, Brent, and concluded he is not a suspect. Investigators also found no foul play. NBC 7 attempted to speak with Brophy’s husband Wednesday, but he was not available. Since Brophy disappeared, more than a dozen searches have covered three specific areas. Friends, relatives, coworkers and strangers have searched trails and Doane Pond in Palomar Mountain Park. Two websites dedicated to finding Brophy feature photos of her with family and members of her hospital team. A piece of a gold necklace or bracelet similar in design to one of Brophy’s was also found along a trail. A law enforcement source close to the case said investigators cannot definitively say it belongs to Brophy. Her brother, Ramon Fabregas, described the item this way: “It’s a common chain that matches her jewelry.” Family members have also confirmed that Brophy stopped at a shop in Temecula and at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula on the day she disappeared — two stops that were not previously known. The Brophy family says she was known to visit Pechanga often. After spending two hours there, she went to Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center, then to Palomar State Park. At the park, her phone pinged one more time not far from the car. After that, it’s not known what happened.
