The FAA on Thursday issued McKinney National Airport (DTX) its operating certificate, the first new commercial airport certification granted in Texas in more than 20 years. The certificate allows the airport to begin commercial passenger service when it opens in November. The airport will host Avelo Airlines and it’s nine domestic flights, four of which were announced today: Atlanta, GA (New) Denver, CO (New) Nashville, TN (New) New Orleans, LA (New) Fort Lauderdale/Miami, FL Orlando, FL Fort Myers, FL Tampa, FL Las Vegas, NV Though options are limited,Andrew Levy, CEO of Avelo Airlines, said the airport’s small size is one of its biggest advantages. “Big airports like DFW are phenomenal airports,” Levy said. “You can get anywhere in the world out of there. But it’s big, long lines, long walks, lots of traffic to get there. This, on the other hand, is an easy-to-use, convenient airport for those who it’s accessible to.” Avelo Airlines plans to begin service from McKinney on Nov. 11.
