Crews on Thursday spent time removing derelict boats from the Oakland Estuary as part of a massive cleanup effort. Officials said over the next two weeks marine units will remove more than a dozen sunken vessels from the waterway. “So far this year more than 50 abandoned vessels, derelict or surrendered, were removed from this estuary,” Oakland police Chief James Beere said. “A year ago we came out here and there were boats dumped on the dry dock, in the parking lot, with masts coming out from the top of the water.” NBC Bay Area’s Christie Smith has more on the cleanup effort in the video report above. ...read more read less
