CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- The University of Virginia will honor three football players who lost their lives in a mass shooting on campus in 2022 during Saturday's game. Twenty-two-year-old D’Sean Perry of Miami, Fla., 20-year-old Devin Chandler of Virginia Beach and 20-year-old Lavel Davis  Jr. of Ridgeville, S.C., are remembered as smart, kind young men with bright futures ahead of them. The annual UVA Strong Game on Saturday, Sept. 26, is a time for the school to remember and honor them. In a press release, UVA said its athletics department will give away 30,000 "UVA Strong" T-shirts with the men's football jersey numbers: 1 (Davis), 15 (Chandler), and 41 (Perry) at the game. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. against Delaware. The three men were killed on Nov. 13, 2022, after 27 UVA students went to Washington, D.C. by bus for a field trip, leaving campus a little before lunchtime. As they were arriving back on campus, fellow student Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr. shot and killed the men and injured two other students. Jones fled the scene and wasn’t arrested until around 11 hours later in Henrico County. Jones pleaded guilty to 10 charges on Nov. 20, 2024, including three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of use of a firearm in a felony. His attorneys argued he had slipped into a state of delusion at the time of the shooting.
