A 32-year-old San Jose man who was also a school official has been charged with attempting to sex traffic a minor and attempting to coerce and entice a minor, federal prosecutors said. Ruben Guzman made his initial court appearance Wednesday and was arraigned on the charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California said. According to statements made in court, Guzman was an assistant middle school principal. The indictment alleges Guzman attempted to engage in a commercial sex act with someone he believed was younger than 14. It also alleges he attempted to engage in sexual activity with someone he believed was younger than 18. If convicted, Guzman faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on both counts. The attempted sex trafficking charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, while the attempted coercion and enticement charge carries a 10-year mandatory minimum. He also faces a fine of up to $250,000 and possible forfeiture, federal prosecutors said. This comes after a separate case involving 46-year-old Todd Baldwin, a former operations manager at Valley Christian High School in San Jose, who pleaded guilty to two counts of online child enticement and two counts of receipt of child pornography. Federal prosecutors alleged Baldwin paid 16- and 17-year-old boys, including at least one student he knew through the school, to create sexually explicit images and videos for him and for sale online.
