A 15-year-old boy was wounded in an exchange of gunfire involving occupants of several vehicles and security guards at a West Oakland public housing complex early Monday, with stray bullets hitting a nearby preschool.The shooting happened around 12:43 am Monday at West Oakland's City Towers housing complex, on the 1000 block of Eighth Street, when as many as four vehicles carrying multiple people were traveling eastbound. As Bay Area News Group reports, occupants of at least two of the vehicles began shooting at three security guards, who returned fire, according to initial police reports.The gunfire triggered a gunshot detection system alert, and the security guards also called police, but the vehicles had left by the time officers arrived.According to the News Group, the 15-year-old showed up at a hospital a short time later with a gunshot wound to his foot. Police confirmed he had been involved in the shooting by connecting him to a Hyundai parked near the hospital with at least one bullet hole that had been reported stolen earlier in Oakland. Police reportedly found blood on the driver’s seat as well as a pistol. Initial reports indicate the teenager was believed to have been driving the Hyundai while other occupants fired shots. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a firearm. The other occupants of the Hyundai, along with those in the other vehicles, were still being sought.The three security guards who returned fire were released after being questioned, and a motive for the shooting remains under investigation, per the News Group. No one else was reported injured.KTVU reports that workers at a preschool near the scene discovered that a bullet had gone through the window of a kindergarten classroom, while another was lodged in the building’s exterior paneling. The school already has a bullet-resistant wall around its courtyard, and staff are now reportedly considering adding bulletproof windows along the front of the building. Residents nearby told KTVU the gunfire was loud enough to wake people in their homes. One father of three said he heard roughly 10 shots in quick succession before one of his children ran into his bedroom, frightened.“He told me, ‘Dad, I heard some shootings outside, it’s close to my house,’ and he’s scared to go back to his room to sleep,” the father said, speaking to KTVU.The man said a bullet also entered his home’s bathroom during a shooting last year while his family was upstairs. He said the repeated violence has made his family reluctant to let their children play outside.According to KTVU, preschool staff and parents in the neighborhood are now calling for increased police patrols, saying the recurring gunfire has made them concerned about the safety of children and other residents.The West Oakland shooting came less than 24 hours after another fatal shooting elsewhere in Oakland's Grand Lake neighborhood when a San Francisco man was shot in a parking lot near Grand Lake Theater at about 1:56 am Sunday. He was taken to a hospital with at least one gunshot wound and later died.Oakland police are investigating the shooting.
