(WRIC) -- A driver is in the hospital after a tree fell in front of a Tidewater Academy school bus and caused a crash in Prince George County Tuesday morning, authorities said. Around 6:40 a. m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, crews with Prince George County Fire and EMS and officers with the Prince George County Police Department were called to a crash near the intersection of County Drive and Alden Road. When firefighters arrived, they found that the school bus had hit a tree. Thankfully, no students were on the bus, but officials said the driver was taken to a local hospital for further care. The driver's condition is currently unknown as of the time of reporting. The school bus was not operated by Prince George County Public Schools, but by Tidewater Academy in Sussex County's Wakefield area, according to photos from fire officials. In an update shared on Facebook from the Prince George County Police Department, authorities said they discovered the bus was on County Drive when it hit the tree after it fell directly in front of the bus. "Officers determined that the driver of the bus was not at fault and it was an unavoidable collision," officers said in the post. (Photo: Prince George County Fire and EMS) Laura DeWees, the head of Tidewater Academy, issued a statement on Facebook, saying that the driver, named Ms. Mary, was on the way to pick up her students when a large tree limb fell in front of the bus. "She was unable to divert from the path of the tree, causing her to hit the tree," DeWees said in the post in part. "This is a very scary reality that could have happened to any one of us and we are so thankful that we were not transporting students and that our driver is safe."
