A Fort Worth woman said she feels fortunate to be alive after a driver struck her in a parking lot over the weekend, leaving her with two broken legs, a collapsed lung and a broken rib. Fort Worth police identified the driver as 22-year-old Yoriel Cabrera. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and intoxication assault with a vehicle and has since been released from the Tarrant County Jail after posting bond. Tiffany Chapman, a mother and nurse, spoke Monday from Harris Methodist about the crash and the injuries she suffered. “It’s been lots of emotion. Uh, lots of pain,” Chapman said. Chapman said she was out with friends Friday night at a pool hall off Crowley Road, just south of Interstate 20 in Fort Worth, when someone in her group had a verbal exchange with a man in the parking lot. Chapman said the man appeared intoxicated. Less than a minute later, while she was still in the parking lot, Chapman said she saw headlights and then felt the impact. “I knew I wasn’t dead because I was in pain, but all I could do was call on God because I didn’t know what else to do,” Chapman said. “Even though I knew that I was alive, I didn’t know what had been damaged.” Chapman said she suffered breaks in both legs, a collapsed lung and a broken rib. “Lots of confusion because I don’t feel like the interaction that we had with that guy was worth him trying to kill us,” Chapman said. According to Fort Worth police, Cabrera tried to run away after the crash but did not get far. Investigators said bystanders kept him from fleeing. Chapman said she did not know the driver who struck her. Now facing a recovery with significant uncertainty, Chapman said she is thankful she survived and is able to share her story. “I’m grateful, and I’m thankful to God that I’m just bruised and broken, but able to heal,” Chapman said.
