A UC Berkeley student said she was followed and chased into her off-campus apartment building on Tuesday night. Berkeley junior Eden Winograd said this all happened at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday when she was walking her dog near her off-campus apartment complex. That night, Winograd said she was wa lking her dog on the same path she does every night when she noticed a man approaching whom she had seen a few days earlier. “I started to panic a little bit, but I didn’t want to offend him if he was just standing there,” she said, recalling that she then started crossing the street. But then, she said the man started following directly behind her and saying things to her while she walked. “I started speeding up and heard his feet banging on the floor behind me,” she said. “I went up to the gate, I buzzed myself in, I went, and I closed it, and then I heard clanging sounds while I was walking inside, and I turned around, and he was like scaling the gate,” Winograd continued. “My heart sank, I was out of breath, my heart was pounding,” she recalled. She made it inside the elevator of her building before anything else happened, then called the police. Winograd posted the surveillance video of the incident on TikTok, where it has now been viewed more than 858,000 times. That surveillance video has now also been shared by Berkeley Police. The video shows Winograd walking into the gate of her apartment complex, walking her dog on a leash. A few seconds later, a man can be seen climbing over the same gate where she entered and following in the same direction Winograd walked in, holding something in his hand. Police said that initial reports indicated the suspect had a knife in his hand, but investigators later found that the object was likely a barbecue lighter. It is still unclear why that man would be holding a barbecue lighter. But for Winograd, that doesn’t change how alarming this incident was. “I don’t care if they have a weapon in their hand or nothing in their hand, I don’t want to be chased the second I step out of my apartment. I don’t want to be chased and have to watch someone claw their way up a wall to get to where I live,” she said. Police said that the following day, they were called about the same man lying on the sidewalk in the same area. Berkeley police said they detained him and confirmed he was involved in “the prior trespassing incident.” Police did not arrest that man, but they did send a case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for review.
