The Mexican Navy Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc, the same one from that Brooklyn Bridge incident last year, will be paying a visit to the Bay next week, and welcoming the public to come aboard for several days at Piers 15-17.The 297-foot, three-masted ARM Cuauhtémoc, which serves as the flagship of the Mexi can Navy, will be making a visit to San Francisco from September 23 to 27, docking at Piers 15-17 on the Embarcadero. The ship, which had a widely covered collision with the Brooklyn Bridge in April 2025 that left two people dead, is all repaired and coming to SF as part of "a four-day goodwill visit celebrating maritime tradition."It will pass under the Golden Gate Bridge around 9:30 am on Wednesday, September 23, before coming into port.The nonprofit Ocean Alliances (OA), formerly Sails San Francisco, has been recruiting and hosting international naval tall ships since 1999, and has recently expanded its reach to Alaska, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The organization is planning a big tall-ship event in San Francisco in 2029 to celebrate its 30th anniversary."The arrival of the Cuauhtémoc will give Bay Area residents a rare opportunity to experience one of Mexico’s most important maritime symbols firsthand,” says Alison Healy, CEO of Ocean Alliances, in a statement. "The ship carries a message of peace, goodwill and friendship wherever she sails, and her visit will provide a spectacular sight on San Francisco Bay."Built in Bilbao, Spain and designed by naval architect Juan José Alonso Verástegui, the Cuauhtémoc joined the Mexican Navy in September 1982.Members of the public can come aboard the ship from noon to 3:30 pm on Wednesday, and then 10 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday. and 10 am to 8 pm Friday and Saturday.The ship will have a formal farewell on Sunday, September 27, before sailing off at 10 am. ...read more read less
