The Idaho Potato Drop is returning to downtown Boise this New Year's Eve, but it will not be held in its traditional location outside the Idaho State Capitol.Founder and organizer Dylan Cline clarified Friday that the annual cel
ebration will move to a new location downtown that is "not far" from its longtime spot at the Capitol. Cline has not yet announced the exact location.The clarification comes after organizers explored moving the event out of downtown Boise entirely.Last month, Expo Idaho officials told Ada County commissioners that Potato Drop organizers had toured the fairgrounds and were seeking a contract that would have used much of the property for the New Year's Eve celebration.PREVIOUS COVERAGE | Idaho Potato Drop organizers exploring move to Expo Idaho fairgroundsAt the time, Expo Idaho Director Helen Baker said organizers were requesting a contract that would use nearly the entire grounds, including most of the Expo building.However, Baker told Idaho News 6 Friday that Expo Idaho will not host the event this year."We are not going to be the home to the Drop this year," Baker said in a statement.Baker said the main Expo building, which organizers would have needed for the event, is already scheduled for painting, kitchen upgrades and other renovation projects during Christmas break.While organizers now plan to keep the Potato Drop downtown, plans for the new location have not yet been submitted to the City of Boise.A city spokesperson told Idaho News 6 Friday that the city has not received a permit application for this year's event.READ MORE | Parents of injured girl file tort claim over Idaho Potato Drop fireworks explosionThis year's celebration comes one year after a young girl was injured by falling glass during the event's fireworks show. Her family later filed a tort claim against the City of Boise and others, alleging officials allowed the event to continue despite longstanding concerns about planning and permitting.It is not yet clear where downtown the Potato Drop will be held, when organizers plan to submit a permit application or whether any changes are planned for this year's fireworks display.Idaho News 6 has reached out to organizers for additional details about the new location, permitting and plans for this year's celebration.
