An Oklahoma City teen is behind bars for allegedly hitting a Black woman with his truck, after initially claiming he hit an animal. Police say the unidentified 17-year-old struck 22-year-old Ranesha Scyrus on Sept. 10 as she rode an electric scooter home. It happened near railroad tracks on Rock well Ave. After the collision, the teen called his mother and drove to her job, saying that he hit a deer. Police said they received a call around 10:15 p.m., two hours after the crash happened. So that’s certainly not something we see every day,” Master Sgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department told KFOR. Police said the teen admitted to being on his phone making a video when he hit Scyrus. Authorities also suspect he had been drinking. “Police came to the scene, interviewed him. Obviously, looked at all the evidence involved. He showed signs of intoxication. He ended up being arrested that evening,” said Sgt. Knight. The teen faces charges of DUI, manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, according to KWTV. Scyrus’ mother, Tameka Scyrus, says she wants the teen charged as an adult. “I didn’t find out until she was already gone, like a day later,” she told KWTV. “She was gone. I can’t see her body.” Scyrus says she wishes her daughter would’ve called her to come pick her up after work that night. “I wish she would have said, ‘Mama, just come get me’,” she said. “I would have came.” She says Ranesha usually rides her scooter on the sidewalk, but it ends just before the railroad tracks. “So, what are people supposed to do?” she told the outlet. “Everybody don’t have cars.” Scyrus’ mother also questions the teen’s story about hitting an animal and what happened after the accident. “I never seen a deer around here and where did that two hours go? I just got so many questions,” she said. The teen’s court records are sealed because of his age. However, KWTV reports that a judge set his bond at $100,000 and barred him from driving if released.
