A Pittsburg councilwoman says she’s gotten death threats and was recently assaulted over the city’s approved data center. “When they become threatening to us. When they become violent. I say that because I was assaulted,” Councilmember Arlene Kobata said on a podcast. Kobata said the w oman, angry over the city approving a data center, assaulted her at a public event.   “She grabbed me and shoved me a couple of times, and had some strong words with me,” she said. Kobata says that’s not the only scary incident she’s experienced as the community has become increasingly fired up over the 77-acre data center set to be built on the former site of a golf course. She says she and others have received harassing emails and even death threats. Kobata was a member of the planning commission who agreed the project is compliant with California environmental regulations. She insists the center will not be a drain on natural resources. The threats are drawing criticism from many in the community, includingPittsburg’smayor, who points out the city has paused further action while it conducts community outreach. In a statement, Mayor Dionne Adams said, “Violence against anyone is never the answer. We can disagree passionately, but we must do so peacefully and ensure every resident has a safe and meaningful opportunity to be heard.” Kobata insists the data center will not harm the community and says she was not on council when it was approved.
