Eight people are displaced and two are hurt after a massive fire tore through two homes in Trenton, NJ, leaving both badly damaged. The fire broke out around 6 p.m. on Sept. 17 near Broad and Liberty streets. The Trenton fire chief told NBC10 that a fire truck happened to be just around the corne r when the flames broke out and crews quickly spotted heavy smoke rising from the area. Firefighters brought the fire under control in just under an hour but not before flames spread through both homes. “We had heavy fire first and second floor on the exteriors of the home. Companies that went inside and continued to fight the fire — and they had fire on all three floors in both homes,” Trenton Fire Chief Nicholas Migliacci said. Aerial video from SkyForce10 showed firefighters pouring water onto the homes. From the ground, the fronts of both homes could be seen blackened and charred with windows burned out and visible damage stretching from the lower levels to the upper floors. One person was injured after jumping from a second-floor window to escape the flames, officials said. Another person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Officials have not confirmed whether the smoke detectors inside the homes were working. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said a recent uptick in fires across the city serves as a reminder for families to make sure they are prepared in case of a fire. “Make sure your smoke detectors are working, that you do have an escape plan, that you know if you live on the third or second floor, you know how you are going to get out,” Gusciora said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The families who lived in the homes told NBC10 that despite losing so much, they were grateful to have made it out alive.
