The city’s Department of Sanitation will host the shredding event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Recycling Drop-Off Center, 2829 Elysian Fields Ave. Orleans Parish residents can bring up to 50 pounds of personal or sensitive documents for secure on-site shredding. The city said residents are encouraged to arrive early because shredding services will end once capacity is reached. Accepted shredding materials include mixed office paper, light cardboard and similar paper products. Plastic, CDs, DVDs and metal items are not accepted, although paper clips and staples may remain on documents. The shredding event will coincide with the city’s regular Saturday recycling drop-off program. Residents can bring materials including paper, corrugated cardboard, boxboard, certain plastics, small metal items, Mardi Gras beads, batteries, light bulbs, electronics and glass. The center also accepts televisions, with a limit of four; tires, with a limit of five; and up to 50 pounds of glass. Corks and caps should be removed from glass items before drop-off. The recycling program is limited to Orleans Parish residents. Businesses and organizations are not eligible to use the drop-off service.
