California license plates have followed a familiar 9series sequence for nearly 50 years. That configuration began with 1AAA000 in 1980 and ended with 9ZZZ999 this year. More than 110,000 plates with the format from 1980 have yet to be registered. The new sequence uses the reverse series configuratio n of 000AAA0.
