Toole County Undersheriff Tyler Foss says the response was immediate."About six cars derailed. Three of them flipped on their side. We called everybody out. City got the roads blocked off tried to give some space just in case something happened, or if there was a leak or anything like that," Foss said.Foss confirmed, among the derailed cars one carrying propane, one carrying a full load of diesel, and two others carrying gasoline and diesel that were nearly empty. The propane car did not flip but came off the rails. Authorities shut down businesses within a half mile and closed Roosevelt Highway as a precaution.Because the derailment fell within the evacuation zone, Shelby Public Schools took immediate action."We shut down the school just because it was within our evacuation zone. They just transported them to the airport to get them away from the incident so parents could come and pick up their kids in a safe area," Foss said.Shelby Public Schools confirmed students were evacuated and transported to the nearby airport, where guardians picked them up. Classes and after-school activities were canceled for the day. Normal school operations are expected to resume Tuesday.For nearby residents like Claude Barnes, the morning started with a startling sound."I'm used to the railroad noises I live right here way loud. So I got out, came out. I saw some emergency lights, went back in. After daylight I came out and saw the mess," Barnes said.BNSF confirmed there were no injuries to the crew and no release of hazardous materials. The derailed cars were secured and cleared from the main line. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation. The Toole County Sheriff's Office said roads surrounding the area had been closed due to "the potential presence of hazardous materials." Additionally, the sheriff's office said there had not been any reported leaks in the area. The public was asked to avoid the area as crews respond.The BNSF spokesperson said this incident is under investigation.In a social media post around 8:16 a.m., Shelby Public Schools said students were moved to the nearby airport for parent pickup as a result of this derailment.
