INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on Monday awarded $38 million in grants to 19 Indiana organizations working to help veterans who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes. The funding is part of a record $1.17 billion in VA grants awarded to 680 organizations n ationwide for fiscal year 2027. The Indiana grants will support programs that help veterans avoid homelessness, find housing and remain in stable housing. The funding also will help organizations quickly house veterans and their families who are already homeless. The grants are being distributed through two VA programs: Supportive Services for Veteran Families and Grant and Per Diem. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families program provides assistance to veterans facing the imminent loss of their homes, helps families find more suitable housing and provides rapid rehousing for veterans who are homeless. The Grant and Per Diem program supports transitional housing and services for veterans, including programs designed to help veterans move from temporary housing into permanent homes. It also supports specialized housing for women veterans and veterans who are chronically mentally ill, elderly or frail. VA officials said the grants build on the agency’s efforts to reduce veteran homelessness. The VA says it helped house 51,936 homeless veterans in fiscal year 2025, the highest number in seven years. “VA medical centers across Indiana remain committed to ensuring Veterans have access to safe, stable housing and the supportive services they need to thrive,” said Michael Hershman, director of the Richard L.
