It wasn’t the prettiest win but the Eagles did enough to pick up a victory in Week 1. They sputtered at times on offense and gave up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on defense but still pulled out a 24-22 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday at the Linc.  They’re 1-0 for the sixth consecutive season under Nick Sirianni. Let’s get to the report card: Quarterback Jalen Hurts: 14/25, 203 yards, 3 TDs, 122.2 passer rating; 46 rushing yards The Eagles needed Jalen Hurts to take over and he did that enough to win this game with both his arm and his legs. He threw some perfect passes like the first touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert, the sideline ball to DeVonta Smith and the touchdown to Dontayvion Wicks. And Hurts also made things happen with his legs, like when he took off on a scramble on a crucial 3rd-and-18 to move the sticks. So much was said about Hurts this offseason but he began the 2026 season with a really strong performance. The offense is going to take some time to really hit its stride but Hurts gets credit for doing enough to get a win. Grade: A- Running back Saquon Barkley: 15 carries, 83 yards, long of 42 There wasn’t a ton of room for Saquon Barkley in this game but he did bust that 42-yard run. There were some negative runs in this game, which felt a bit like last year. But, again, it’s hard to pin that on Barkley. He did get run over in pass protection by rookie Sonny Styles, but held up fine in that part of the game on some other snaps. There weren’t many chances for Tank Bigsby or Will Shipley. Although it was weird to see Shipley get back-to-back carries in the fourth quarter of a tight game. Grade: B Receiver Dontavion Wicks: 2 catches on 4 targets, for 73 yards, 1 TD After moving on from A.J. Brown this offseason, DeVonta Smith is now their No. 1 receiver and he’s getting that kind of attention. Despite that, Smith still had three catches for 53 yards, including an incredible toe-tapping catch on the right sideline on third down. And Dontayvion Wicks made the most of his opportunities with a career-long 64-yard catch and a touchdown a bit later. Makai Lemon had a weird debut. He had 3 catches on 4 targets for -5 yards. But he did get down the field and get a key block on Hurts’ 22-yard scramble. Grade: B Tight end Dallas Goedert: 4 catches on 5 targets, 77 yards, 2 TDs After scoring a career-high 11 touchdowns in 2025, Dallas Goedert didn’t take long to get on the board in 2026. He had his first touchdown catch on a seam ball early in the second quarter. And in the fourth quarter, Goedert caught the ball and rumbled 43 yards for what ended up being the deciding touchdown. Goedert might not be the same blocker he once was, but he’s still a threat through the air. Grade: A– Offensive line This is a real concern going forward. Both Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens had their share of struggles in this game. There was a moment in the second half where Dickerson began to look a bit like a turnstile. That’s obviously a concern because the 27-year-old has had a ton of injuries in his career and he might simply not be the same player anymore. While Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw are good players, you’d like to see your Pro Bowl guard hold up better. Jurgens was called for a couple holds in this game too and Jordan Mailata was called for a false start. Jalen Hurts was under too much pressure and the run game wasn’t nearly as effective as it needed to be against an aggressive Washington defense. Plenty of room for growth. Grade: C- Defensive line Jordan Davis: 8 tackles The Eagles did not get as much pressure against Jayden Daniels as many expected going into this game. The defense sacked Daniels just one time and hit him just twice. Neither of those hits were credited to defensive linemen. But Moro Ojomo made the play of the game on a fourth-quarter 2-point conversion, when he stopped a shovel pass that would have tied up the game at 24-24. Ojomo felt the guard pull, so he did a spin move to meet the tight end in the hole and basically ice the game. Grade: B Linebacker Zack Baun: 12 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 PBUs The player of the game was Zack Baun, who was all over the field Sunday afternoon. He filled up the stat sheet and showed off his ability in coverage and against the run. He had a PBU and a tackle for loss on back-to-back plays in the first half and had a huge play to run down Jayden Daniels short of the sticks. According to NextGen Stats, Baun was targeted six times in coverage and gave up just 3 receptions for -2 yards. Jihaad Campbell also had an active day with 9 tackles and a sack. Grade: A Secondary Marcus Epps: 7 tackles The Eagles’ outside cornerbacks, Quinyon Mitchell and Riq Woolen, seemed to have strong performances. But it was a game to forget for Cooper DeJean in the slot. The All-Pro struggled against veteran Stefon Diggs, who got him turned all around a few times. DeJean seemed to suffer some sort of injury early but never left the game. Woolen nearly pulled in a first-half interception. Marcus Epps had to leave briefly with a shoulder injury but returned.  Grade: B Special teams Braden Mann: 7 punts, 51.6 average, long of 64, 4 downed in 20 If Zack Baun was the player of the game, Braden Mann was pretty close. The Eagles extended Mann this offseason and he had a tremendous first game of this season. Jalen Carter’s PAT block was huge because it took a point off the board and it also looked like it altered the trajectory of a later field goal; it looked like the kicker wanted to avoid No. 98. Both Darius Cooper and Jeremiah Trotter had multiple tackles. And Jake Elliott made all his kicks. Grade: A Coaching Record: 1-0 There’s obviously room for growth but it wasn’t an awful first game for offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. There are definitely things to learn from this and play calls he’d like to have back, but at least the operation seemed clean. On defense, Vic Fangio dialed up some fun pressures and simulated pressures — likely because his line wasn’t getting home. And Sirianni is now 6-0 in season openers. That’s not easy to do.
