A shooting involving Saginaw Police and an armed man is under investigation after officers were sent to a home Saturday morning for a welfare check. According to the Saginaw Police Department, officers were sent to a home on the 300 block of Asbury Drive at about 11:25 a.m., where a man was repor tedly having a mental health crisis and attempted to harm himself. When officers arrived, they reported encountering a man armed with a rifle. Saginaw Police said officers gave repeated instructions to “de-escalate the situation,” but that the armed man “advanced on officers with the rifle and one Saginaw officer discharged his handgun.” Medics from the Saginaw Fire Department and Fort Worth Fire Department EMS personnel provided medical care and took the man to a hospital. His current condition is unknown. No further information about the shooting has been released, including what was said in the moments leading up to the shooting or what happened leading up to the 911 call. The Texas Rangers have been called in to conduct an independent criminal investigation into the shooting and they will present their findings to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. The Saginaw Police Department is running a concurrent administrative investigation to ensure that department policy and procedures were followed. “Our department remains committed to justice and transparency throughout the investigative process,” the department said in a statement.
