SFbased tech CEO calls for AI development slowdown
Sep 12, 2026
(KRON) -- San Francisco-based AI company Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei laid out the dangers of AI development progressing too quickly in an essay published Saturday calling for slower development and closer monitoring of AI technologies.
Amodei highlighted the risks of "reckless" AI development includ
ing losing control of AI systems and the misuse of the technology for cyberattacks or bioterrorism.
"We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," Amodei said. "Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain."
The essay was published following a public resignation announcement on X earlier this week from a former Anthropic researcher during which the ex-employee Jacob Coxson accused both Anthropic and OpenAI of not "acting responsibly," and "gambling with our lives."
Amodei is also not the only tech CEO who feels this way. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Fortune Magazine that, "AI development beyond human control is 'absolutely' possible," and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said, "Dario is right," in a post on X in response to Amodei's essay.
While many have met various tech CEO's calls for caution on AI development with cynicism, Coxson denies the notion that this is a marketing ploy.
"The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade," Coxson said in his X thread. "This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately."
The essay also follows the Hugging Face incident where OpenAI systems went rogue and hacked their own data processing systems.
In the essay We Must Pace the Frontier, Amodei suggests a three-step solution to ensure safer AI evolution, including the monitoring of development efforts by third-party evaluators and creating safety standards with government oversight, first in democratic countries and then within authoritarian governments.
Anthropic’s head of policy Sarah Heck posted on X commending Amodei's post as "an important call to action."
Growing concerns of the dangers of AI have prompted action from local and national leaders not just in the context of out-of-control development, but also in the context of its threat to the environment and electricity supplies.
Thursday, State Senator Scott Weiner saw these fears as a confirmation of concerns he had years ago telling KRON4 sister station, "We’re seeing warnings from people in the AI world that we need to get it together."
San Francisco and Gilroy have both called for moratoriums on building AI data centers until the issues can be properly assessed and addressed.
"These facilities are major consumers of water and energy, and federal projections show Data Center electricity use could triple by 2028," San Francisco city officials said.
Anthropic's language system Claude currently leads the AI race as the company prepares for its anticipated $3 trillion initial public offering in October, with OpenAI's ChatGPT following closely behind and SpaceX already being a major player. OpenAI reportedly plans to IPO by 2027.
Anthropic and SpaceX struck a deal in May that allowed Claude to expand.
