(KRON) -- Officials are trying to figure out how a marmot recently ended up in Antioch, the second marmot found in the San Francisco Bay Area this September. Marmots are furry animals that live in burrows across the Sierra Nevada mountains. Officials suspect that Antioch's marmot hitched a ride f rom the mountains to the Bay Area on a tourist's vehicle. The first marmot was found and rescued in the Mission District of San Francisco. "Unbelievably, a second yellow-bellied marmot was spotted loitering at a job site in Antioch," Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue wrote. YUWR safely captured the animal near Delta Fair Boulevard. Marmots are known for climbing into vehicle undercarriages, drinking radiator fluid, passing out, and later waking up in locations far away from where they entered a vehicle or trailer, according to YUWR. Antioch Animals Services said the second marmot likely made its trip from a high altitude region, possible around Lake Tahoe, following Labor Day weekend. YUWR said the animals also could have been stowaways in vehicles returning from the Burning Man festival in Nevada. "If you happen to have returned to the Delta Fair Blvd area of Antioch near the Pittsburg end in the last few days please reach out to us with your weekend location so we can potentially have this marmot return to it's home," AAS wrote Wednesday.
