Two people are in custody following a standoff that shut down a portion of Interstate 580 in San Leandro, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said. The incident was first reported at 11:25 a.m. Thursday when a deputy tried to stop a Ford Mustang for a traffic violation. Authorities said the dri ver failed to yield and deputies did not pursue out of an abundance of caution and concern for public safety. The suspect vehicle was later located through license plate reader technology and the sheriff’s office deployed a drone to follow. Authorities said the Mustang was later seen driving the wrong way on eastbound I-580 and crashed with another vehicle before continuing to drive away. California Highway Patrol officers in the area also attempted to stop the Mustang, which continued to drive away before the vehicle was disabled and stopped. The sheriff’s office said both occupants of the car refused to come out of the vehicle, prompting a freeway shutdown and standoff. SWAT vehicles also responded to the incident just east of the Benedict Drive offramp. “The passenger eventually exited and surrendered. The driver continued to refuse commands. A chemical irritant was deployed to gain the driver’s compliance, and the driver subsequently exited the vehicle and was taken into custody,” the sheriff’s office said. Both the driver and passenger were taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries, officials said, adding the driver of the other vehicle the Mustang crashed into was also transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
