Family members of a 32-year-old senior artificial intelligence researcher at Nvidia are pleading for state intervention, questioning authorities’ ruling that his death was a suicide and fighting to halt the scheduled disposition of his remains. Irfan Al-Hussaini was found unconscious in his Pal o Alto home in July and died eight days later. While authorities ruled the death a suicide, his family and close friends say the determination makes no sense, noting that the senior data scientist had delivered a professional presentation just hours before authorities were called to his residence. “So he was fine. Everyone thought he did a good job. Everything seemed normal,” his sister said. Al-Hussaini’s family marched together to hand-deliver a formal complaint and emergency petition to California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office in Sacramento. They are asking the state to step in before his body is cremated, a procedure they say his wife has scheduled for Thursday. “We fear that important physical evidence will be lost because the body might be [cremated] anytime now, so we really want Attorney General to step in and intervene and make sure that the body is properly investigated,” said his sister, Sarah Al-Hussaini. Friends of the researcher joined the family in calling for a thorough re-examination of the circumstances surrounding his death. “We want truthful investigation we want the justice we want to make sure that every single question concern that the parents have addressed,” said Mohammed Khandokar, a friend of Al-Hussaini.
