INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) A tragedy brought a family and members of the cycling community together on Tuesday to demand a safer Indianapolis for cyclists.On Aug. 31, a vehicle hit 20-year-old Darrion Pate at the intersection of India na Avenue and Waterway Boulevard while he was biking to work.The crash happened at 6 a.m. Aug. 31 at the intersection. Pate died several days later at a hospital from his injuries.His family, co-workers, and other cyclists gathered Tuesday afternoon at the intersection to honor the man they call DP.His life was cut short. It's tragic. It's sad, said Hanable Smith, Darrions father.Smith said Darrion moved to Indianapolis from Alabama a year ago for better opportunities. He was a recent high school graduate and a member of the local Carpenters union.His grandmother, Wanda Pate, remembered Darrions love of her cooking, especially her red velvet cake.The time we went out, eating and having fun. It's memories that'll never go away, she said.She grew emotional as she recalled Darrion telling her, I can always go back home to my Grandma.Many family members traveled from Alabama to honor his memory. A white ghost bike stands at the intersection as a memorial and a reminder for drivers to slow down.Darrion's family is pushing for better bike safety, specifically around construction sites where companies often block roads or redirect bike routes.Ebony Smith, Darrions stepmother, urged drivers to be cautious and called on construction companies to improve their safety standards. I wish going forward they'll be mindful of the cyclists if they are going to take the entire sidewalk and they are forcing them into the streets, she said.She urged companies to add signs or close streets completely if the area is dangerous for cyclists.Safe Streets Indy reported three fatal bike crashes this year, including one deadly crash that happened just a few hours before the collision that killed Darrion.As the community remembers Darrion, they also hope this tragedy will be the last.Kevin Sutton, a cyclist who did not know Darrion, attended the memorial to show support.
