HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico Board of Supervisors is voting Tuesday on a new ordinance that would allow speed cameras in school zones. Cameras are already in place in Chesterfield County, the City of Richmond and several Central Virginia school districts. If approved, anyone who is recorde d driving 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit could face a $100 civil penalty. Cameras would be placed at all nine high schools, as well as at Fairfield and Tuckahoe middle schools, by early 2027. Chesterfield has 18 active cameras with another on the way, while Richmond has 13. The community has continuously raised concerns about speeding to the county. In response, police conducted a multi-day study and found that at one Henrico high school, one-third of daily drivers were speeding. Similar studies were conducted in surrounding areas. These cameras are not related to Flock cameras, which have caused a lot of controversy over privacy concerns. Speeding cameras would only activate when someone speeds past them and capture the rear license plate, make and model. They would only be on when school zone signs are flashing. Police would still review violations before issuing citations. The county said this would be another tool to add to the resources they already have in place to address speeding.
