If you noticed smoke over the Bay coming from Angel Island Tuesday morning, rest assured it is just a planned, controlled burn to thin out flammable fuels.Cal Fire, the Marin County Fire Department, and California State Parks were all out tending to a prescribed burn on Angel Island Tuesday morning. The burn, as scheduled, began around 9 am, and this is the first of what will be multiple burn days, according to a Friday release from California State Parks. Burns will typically go on from 9 am to 6 pm, with smoke potentially lingering long after.Officials are warning residents not to clog up 911 systems to report the smoke."Prescribed burns are planned and coordinated with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to minimize smoke impacts on surrounding communities," the parks department says. "All burning depends on weather and air conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal. If conditions are not conducive, the burn will be rescheduled."Angel Island State Park remained open Tuesday, and will be open on other burn days, the department says, "However, some trails and roads near the burn area, including portions of the Ida Trail, Sunset Trail, and the park’s fire and perimeter roads, will be closed for one to three days during and immediately after the burn."They add, "Access to the summit of Mt Livermore will not be permitted on some burn days as well."This week's prescribed burns are supported by the 2024 Climate Bond, Prop 4, the department says, and is "specifically aimed at reducing fuel loads in grasslands and coastal scrub on the island."Similar prescribed burns took place on Angel Island in April 2023. ...read more read less
