With the Nov. 3 midterm election less than two months away, now is the time to check your voter registration status while there is still time to fix any potential issues. You cannot vote in the next election if you have not registered. You can check your voter status at VoteTexas.gov. If you have n’t registered, the last day to register to vote for the midterm is Monday, Oct. 5. Texans cannot register to vote online unless they do so when renewing or updating their driver’s license. Voter registration forms can be filled out online, but they must be printed, signed, and mailed by the Oct. 5 deadline. Voters can also register at their county election office. If you’re a new voter, register early in case your application has any problems that need to be addressed before it can be accepted. What if you’re on the suspense list? If your voter registration record is on ‘suspense,’ it means your county of registration has received information that you no longer live at the address on your current voter registration record. Voters on the suspense list for two federal cycles (four years) will be removed from the state’s voter rolls. As of the March primary, more than 1.2 million Texas voters are on the suspense list. That includes 55,975 voters in Collin County, 129,015 voters in Dallas County, 55,744 voters in Denton County and 73,067 voters in Tarrant County. What if you need to update your registration? If you’ve recently moved or changed your name, you can now update all your information on your voter registration record through the Texas.gov website. To update your voter registration, you will need your Voter Unique Identifier (VUID) to log in to the Texas.gov portal. You can find your VUID by visiting the Texas SOS My Voter Portal, in which you can enter your name, county, date of birth, and ZIP code to display your voter registration information. You must update this information before the registration deadline of Oct. 5. If you miss the deadline, the Secretary of State says you may return to your old precinct to vote. Voting by mail? If you want to vote by mail, the last day to request a ballot by mail is Friday, Oct. 23. To qualify for a mail-in ballot in Texas, voters must be away from their county of residence on Election Day and during the early voting period, be sick or disabled, be confined in jail but otherwise eligible to vote, or be 65 years old or older. Absentee voters must also include their Texas driver’s license number, Texas DPS-issued ICN or ECN, or the last four digits of their Social Security number, whichever matches their voter record, or a statement that they have not been issued any of those forms of ID. When does midterm voting begin? Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 19 and ends on Friday, Oct. 30. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
