College football returned to the East Bay as the California Golden Bears hosted the UCLA Bruins in a highly anticipated in-state rivalry matchup that drew tens of thousands of fans to UC Berkeley. The season opener marked the first time the Cal Bears have played the Bruins since 2023. The contest also signaled the return of the Joe Roth Memorial Game, which honors the former Cal quarterback who died of cancer during his senior year in 1977. The atmosphere on campus remained charged throughout the day, with swarms of fans filling Berkeley for tailgates featuring live music and refreshments ahead of kickoff. Memorial Stadium reached full capacity, hosting a sold-out crowd of more than 54,000 attendees. “Look at how many people are here, I don’t think you see this many people on any other day besides a rivalry game, it’s just different,” said Cal student Advik Vermani. For many in attendance, the renewed matchup brought back cherished traditions and competitive spirit. “Oh it’s so great to get back to play one of our old rivals it’s a tradition that’s nice to have back this weekend,” said Cal alum Kellie Morlock, adding later that “you can’t beat California football for the best weather and the best place to be.” Supporters from both programs expressed deep sentimental ties to the game and the unique buzz surrounding college football season. “I’ve gone to UCLA for many of the UCLA games, I lived in LA for a number of years, love to hate them,” said Elizabeth Untiedt, a Cal alum. Gene Hampton, whose son plays for Cal, noted the high stakes on the field. “We’re really excited for it, it’s a game we can’t take lightly, they have some good players,” Hampton said.
