NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College football opened the 2026 season in emphatic fashion Saturday night, rolling to a 38-3 victory over Reinhardt in front of the home crowd at Setzler Field. The Wolves struck first behind the return of Tyleke Mathis. Coming off an injury, Mathis found the end zone o n the ground in the opening quarter to put Newberry in front, 7-0. Reinhardt answered later in the quarter with a field goal, cutting the Newberry advantage to 7-3 at the end of the opening 15 minutes. It would prove to be the Eagles’ only points of the night, as the Wolves scored 31 unanswered the rest of the way.The scoring opened up for Newberry in the second quarter, highlighted by an early contender for catch of the year from Will Young V. Quarterback Mason Kidd lofted a pass toward Young in the corner of the end zone, where the receiver made a spectacular falling grab while practically on his back to secure the 22-yard touchdown and extend the Newberry advantage. Later in the quarter, the Wolves turned to Coleman Gray in the red zone. Gray dropped back looking to throw before taking off toward the front-left pylon, squeezing inside the corner of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown run. Jake Spadavecchia added a field goal with less than three minutes remaining in the half, sending the Wolves into the locker room with a commanding 24-3 halftime lead. Newberry’s offense picked up where it left off after the break. In the third quarter, De’Andre “Boogie” Coleman beat his defender down the sideline and hauled in a 34-yard touchdown strike from Kidd. The score gave Kidd his second touchdown pass of the night and pushed the Wolves’ advantage even further. Newberry then reached deep into its bag of tricks to put an exclamation point on the season-opening victory. Facing fourth-and-goal, the Wolves lined up for a field goal before executing a perfectly designed fake. Gray took the snap and ran the option before pitching the ball to Spadavecchia, who raced 12 yards into the end zone for the touchdown. The trick-play score capped Newberry’s 38-point output as the Wolves finished off a dominant 38-3 victory to begin the 2026 campaign. Newberry will remain at Setzler Field next weekend as the Wolves turn their attention to South Atlantic Conference play.
