The suspect accused of shooting a police officer inside the Pittsburg police station Thursday had snuck a gun into the station, according to the East Bay Times. Pittsburg police say an officer was booking a 31-year-old suspect on Thursday when the two got into an altercation and a gun was fired. Both men were hit. NBC Bay Area reached out to the police chief, asking how a gun made it into the booking area, but have not received a response. However, the East Bay Times reported the suspect somehow snuck the gun in. According to law enforcement analyst Michael Leininger, the typical protocol is that suspects are searching for weapons and officers secure their own firearms before entering the booking area. “When you take the handcuffs off an individual, they now have a certain amount of flexibility that they did not have, and if they want to take you on, you’ve enabled that by removing the handcuffs,” he said. The East Bay Times also reported the suspect then assaulted police and is now jailed on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. Mayor Dionne Adams says she wants the investigation to play out. “I don’t know the protocols because I’m not an officer and I can’t really speak to what happened because I don’t know what happened and when, all I know is one of our officers is injured,” Adams said.
