A Brooklyn family is grieving after a beloved mother and grandmother was killed by a New York City subway train while on the job for the MTA. Moet McCullum was working underground on the tracks at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station Thursday, on what was supposed to be a routine night on the job. The 41-year-old was a construction flagger, tasked with warning oncoming train operators of active work zones, according to the Transport Workers Union (TWU). Around 11:30 p.m., a southbound D train struck and killed McCullum. It was not clear if the train operator saw any warning flags or lights. “Everyone was in compliance. Everyone had their protective, their equipment, their flashlight…their vest, the lamps,” said TWU Local 100 Vice President Chris Drummond. The union and the MTA were cooperating with an investigation launched by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The crew working with McCullum will be questioned by the NTSB as they look into how the tragedy occurred. “Depending on the arrangement, the geographical arrangement, where if there’s turns, you have to put more lights out and more flaggers out,” said TWU Local 100 President John Chiarello. “It’s under investigation, but I’m sure the lights were out there and we’ll find out what happened, but we know what the result is.” Transportation officials said McCullum — a mother of three, a grandmother and a twin sister — had been on the job for just 11 months. Her unexpected death has devastated her family and friends. “When I found out, I was at work doing 12 to 8. And I was crying all night because I couldn’t leave work. Really bothered me. Half my body shaking,” said Tyrell Thomas, McCullum’s brother-in-law. “She was the life of the party, she was funny, very outgoing. I’m really going to miss her.
