It was a historic and emotional Thursday night at Stanford, as the women’s soccer team retired number 19: the number worn by star goalkeeper Katie Meyer, who died by suicide in 2022. Meyer’s parents, Gina and Steve, walked to midfield to a standing ovation, surrounded by the team, coaches and fans who came to honor their daughter. “It warms my heart, breaks my heart, warms my heart, the whole thing,” Steve Meyer said. “We used to walk in through those doors. I see it in my eyes right now, so it’s tough. She’d be right over there warming up,” Katie Meyer was a captain for Stanford. In the 2019 national championship game, she made two critical saves to help Stanford beat North Carolina.
