(KRON) -- A Richmond police officer is in the hospital after being shot while carrying out a mental health check on a person Thursday evening. At around 6:40 p.m., Contra Costa County's behavioral health program A3 responded to a request for a mental health check on a person living in a home in th e 2200 block of Key Boulevard. A3 requested a police presence due to the nature of the call. Video of the scene shows heavy police activity in the area near a Grocery Outlet with armed police running towards the store. Several shots can be heard going off on the background. When the first officer arrived on scene, they were shot and transported to the hospital for treatment. They are in stable condition. The suspect proceeded to barricade themselves in the home and fired several more shots from inside the home, striking a Richmond Police Department vehicle and neighboring homes. There were no other injuries. After making contact with the suspect, responding agencies ended up deploying chemical agents.
