Used books of all genres, sizes and forms will go up for grabs this weekend during the Friends of the Park City Library’s annual Miners Day Weekend book sale. This year’s sale, which will take place in the library’s third-floor Community Room, will run Sunday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Sept. 6, at the library, 1255 Park Ave. Hours for the general public run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, with a Friends of the Park City Library member preview from 8-10 a.m. on Sunday, said Cathy Lanigan, Friends of the Park City Library co-chair. “Memberships come with benefits, including early access to book sales and invitations to free, special events,” she said.  The One Book One Community presentation by “Go As a River” author Shelley Read, was one of those special events, according to Lanigan. “We did that in conjunction with the Summit County Library, and we had more than 250 people attend,” she said. “We hosted a Friends reception, so people got to meet the author prior to the presentation.” Friends of the Park City Library memberships can be purchased by visiting tinyurl.com/3xcm77v8 or at the door during the sale or through a QR code that will be set up during different library events, Lanigan said. Memberships also raise awareness of ways for people to give back to the library, Lanigan said. “I’ve had a lot of conversions with friends that don’t realize there is a fundraising side to the library,” she said. “We raise funds through three sources — two book sales a year, Live PC Give PC day of giving and our memberships. While the library is a free service for everybody, people who want to put a little bit of money towards programs and services or say thank you can do so by becoming a Friend is a really great way to do it.” The book sale will end on Monday with a Happy Hour from 2-4 p.m., when people can purchase a tote bag and fill it up with as many books as they can for $15, Friends co-chair Rachel Sahlman said. “These bags are not little,” she said with a laugh. “They are heavy, and it’s so fun to see people walk home with a huge bag of books.” Book prices are as follows: All children’s books — $1 Adult paperbacks — $2 Adult hardcovers — $3 Collections — $5 Puzzles and games — $2 “We added the collections (category) during our Fourth of July sale, and we had a great response,” Lanigan said. “These were books that are like little treasure hunts, and they have a higher value than the other books in the sale.” All book and game purchases can be made by cash and Venmo. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases over $10. “Book sale is an effective way to raise funds for the library while bringing the community together around books,” Sahlman said. “All book sale proceeds go directly to the library for programs and services.” The money supplements the library’s annual budget and helps sustain programs such as cutting down the hold and wait times for eBooks and outdoor movie screenings. In August the library hosted a free screening of Alejandra Vasquez and Sam Osborn’s bilingual documentary “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” made possible through a partnership with the Arts Council of Park City Summit County’s Latino Arts Festival and Mountain Town Music. A new program coming online in early autumn will be the Memory Station, Sahlman said. “This will allow patrons to preserve memories, family history, photographs and stories in a digitized format,” Sahlman said. “The library brought it to the Friends because it is a great community service. People use the library for different things. So this is yet another opportunity for people to come in, interact with the librarians and use our services.”  The Friends of the Library’s used book sales also attracts visitors, Sahlman said. “We get people from Ogden, who put us on our calendar,” she said. “They come every year.” The Park City Library is relying on the Friends’ used book sales more than ever, Lanigan said. “With what’s been happening at the federal level, library funding is less reliable than it used to be,” she said. “And with a bad snow year and the loss of Sundance, we don’t know what the city budget is going to be.” In addition to raising funds, the used books sales serves as a fun way to bring the community together, according to Sahlman. “The way people respond to the event is so much bigger than the funds we raise for library programming,” she said. “They are there right when we open, and they are there when we close.
