Lindsey Vonn shares brief update on her injury from the Olympics
Sep 04, 2026
Decorated speed skier Lindsey Vonn arrived for the opening night of the US Open on Sunday.
A longtime tennis fan, Vonn walked down the open’s celebrity blue carpet on her way to watch two more sporting legends: Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams.
Just seven months ago, Vonn had no idea wha
t she’d be able to do, much less walk a carpet. In February she crashed during the Olympic downhill race and broke her left tibia and right ankle. She suffered compartment syndrome, where pressure builds in a group of muscles, nerves and blood vessels, in that left leg. Vonn admitted later that month that she almost had to have her left leg amputated.
Vonn spent the following months confined to wheelchairs and crutches. She walked unassisted for the first time in public at the Met Gala in early May. Vonn played tennis over the weekend at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, where her friend Roger Federer was inducted on Saturday.
Vonn detailed her improving health and another surgery that lies ahead in a few months on the blue carpet at the open.
“I feel good,” Vonn said to TNT Sports. “I’m getting better. I still have another surgery, so I’m trying to get as strong as possible.”
Vonn tore her left ACL about a week ahead of the Milano Cortina Games in a Swiss World Cup super-G race. She then raced with the injury in the Olympic downhill race in which she crashed. Vonn will look to have the ACL repaired in a few months.
“Once I get my ACL, then I’ll have another long road ahead of me,” Vonn said. “But for now, I feel great, and I’m very thankful for that.”
Vonn said she’d like to have the ACL surgically repaired in November. She said it will be a nine month recovery. Vonn tore her right ACL twice in 2013, once late in that year, leading to her missing the 2014 Olympics. She had that right knee replaced in 2024, helping spur her comeback to skiing after her first retirement in 2019.
Despite Vonn’s dad, Alan Kildow, who taught her how to ski, saying after her crash that she’d never race again if he had any say in the matter, Vonn has yet to rule out a return.
“I can’t really look beyond that,” Vonn said about her looming ACL surgery and recovery. “I don’t really know what the future holds, but I’m just thankful for where I am right now.”
Vonn said a return to racing would stress out Federer and his wife, Mirka Federer, likely in addition to her dad.
“If I do ski again, I know Roger and Mirka are going to kill me,” Vonn said in an interview with Tennis Channel from Newport. “Mirka is always like, ‘I know what you need to do right now, and it’s not this. You need to be doing something else like having kids.’ I definitely gave them some anxiety over the years.”
