Some face higher prostate cancer risk (WISH) – September is prostate cancer awareness month and experts say not everyone has the same risk for the disease. Dr. John Francis, a urologist with Columbus Regional Health, joined WISH-TV’s Health Spotlight segment Thursday evening to discuss wh at puts some at more risk than others. Francis said African American men have a higher risk factor. Family history can also make an impact. Francis said if you have a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer, or if you’ve had a family member diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age, you are also at a higher risk. People with inherited genetic mutations and male military veterans also face an increased risk for prostate cancer, Francis said. Prostate cancer is the number one cancer diagnosed in male veterans. Francis said anyone living with a higher risk for the disease should consult their doctor about screening when you turn 40.
