(KRON) -- About three years ago, Lisa Maria was laid off from her tech startup job. She did what any other tech worker would do: look for another job in the typically high-paying industry. At the same time, Maria was looking at another path: starting her own coffee business. "I think owning and o perating a cafe is probably in the minds of every other millennial," Maria said with a smile. But it was much deeper than that. Maria moved to the United States from Indonesia nearly 20 years ago. Her husband, Ryan Prawiradjaja, also hails from the Southeast Asian country. They wanted to bring Indonesian culture and flavors to the limelight. "We started this coffee shop because we wanted to introduce Indonesian flavors and culture," Maria said. "Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and one of the largest coffee-producing countries in the world. "We noticed there wasn't much representation of Indonesian flavors and culture in the Bay Area, and we wanted to change that through something we're passionate about." That is exactly what Maria and Prawiradjaja are doing with Hijau Coffee. They are opening Silicon Valley's first Indonesian coffee shop. "When I got laid off, I started thinking about what I wanted to do next," Maria said. "Within a few months, I began researching the business and figuring out how to make it happen." Maria and Prawiradjaja made it happen. Hijau Coffee is celebrating the grand opening of its brick-and-mortar shop on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. "Freebies" are given away to the first 50 customers. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and District 6 Councilmember Michael Mulcahy are expected to be there. The opening of the physical storefront comes about two-and-a-half years after launching Hijau Coffee pop-ups in the South Bay. (Hijau Coffee has been in its soft opening phase for weeks.) Hijau Coffee is located at 1432 W San Carlos St., Suite 70, across the street from Safeway. The mom-and-pop cafe takes over the space that was previously a Starbucks. Saturday's grand opening will be more than just coffee. It will be a celebration of Indonesian culture. There will be live music, Indonesian dance performances and gamelan, a traditional Indonesian percussion orchestra. "We're honored to be the first Indonesian coffee shop in Silicon Valley and certainly in San Jose," Maria said. "We've brought together a lot of the Indonesian community, and they're bringing their friends and family as well. It's been rewarding to see people connect with these flavors and traditions." Hijau Coffee's roots are, in part, based in Maria's hometown of West Java in Indonesia. "Coffee is personal for me," Maria said. "I grew up surrounded by the aroma of coffee. My parents owned a coffee stall, and being able to connect that family history with introducing Indonesian flavors has been incredibly meaningful." What should you order at Hijau Coffee?
