(KRON) -- Nvidia is buying the same startup that was hacked into by rogue OpenAI artificial intelligence agents earlier this year. On Thursday, it was reported that the chip-making giant would be purchasing AI platform Hugging Face for $13 billion. Hugging Face is an open-source AI software platfor m that made headlines back in July after rogue AI systems created by ChatGPT parent company OpenAI broke out of their sandbox and hacked its data processing systems. The hack, which apparently was masterminded, launched and carried out entirely by AI agents, sent shockwaves through the tech industry, reigniting concerns about security around AI. Security guards at major tech companies authorize strike over wages The OpenAI Hugging Face hack was followed by announcements from other leading AI companies Anthropic and Meta, claiming their AI models had also broken out and hacked other companies. On news of the deal Thursday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Hugging Face will remain an open source platform. In a post on X, Huang called it an "Exciting day" for the two companies. "Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty," Huang wrote. "They allow every developer, startup, university, industry and country to build with, customize and benefit from AI."
