The L.A. County District Attorney’s Office reached a plea deal this week with a former California Highway Patrol officer from Castaic accused of criminal threats, illegal possession of an assault weapon, illegal possession of ghost guns and contempt of court.  The plea for Brian Timothy Powers , 44, was announced in open court Monday, but the terms were expected to be given at a hearing later this month.   Judge Kevin Rosenberg accepted the deal and ordered the defendant back for a probation and sentencing report from the county’s Probation Department. Powers was ordered to relinquish his firearms.  “The defendant is prohibited from owning, purchasing, receiving, possessing or having, under their custody or control, any firearms, ammunition and ammunition feeding devices including, but not limited to, magazines,” according to an email Tuesday from the DA’s Office.  He also waived his right to be sentenced by the judge who accepted his plea.   The terms of the deal mentioned in the minute order include a reduction of the criminal threats charge, from a felony to a misdemeanor, to which Powers pleaded no contest.  He also pleaded no contest to four felony charges regarding the illegal possession of an assault weapon.   The other charges for the possession of ghost guns were not discussed in the minute order.  Powers’ initial offense was violating a court order in connection with his divorce.   The investigation into that allegation led deputies to locate Powers on Oct. 2, 2024, when he ran from them, according to deputies’ sworn statements in support of a search warrant.  During the course of a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station investigation, deputies learned Powers had 11 guns registered to his Castaic address, as well as a number of ghost guns that were assembled and not serialized, according to the warrant return.
