Monterey County authorities continue to search for a Salinas man and his 14-year-old daughter, both of whom are suspected in the death of an infant — possibly born of incest — who was found dead by the side of a road last month.The dead newborn, whom authorities have named Baby Angelita, was fou nd on August 1 by the side of a road in Moss Landing, a town on Monterey Bay halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey. The Monterey County Sheriff's office began publicizing the case on Monday, saying they were seeking the public's help in locating 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez and his 14-year-old daughter, whom they say he is "concealing" from law enforcement following the death of the infant.The sheriff's office said in a release that they believe the 14-year-old "gave birth to Baby Angelita along the side of the road and placed her on the ground before leaving the area." The child was found with evidence of "traumatic injury," and it's believed that Galvez Perez fathered the child with his daughter, as KTVU reports.Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto is using the case to argue for the effectiveness of the county's Flock camera network, amid some public outcry over privacy concerns."With limited information initially available following the discovery of Baby Angelita, detectives utilized the Flock automated license plate reader camera system to develop investigative leads," the sheriff's office said in the release, adding that the Flock system "played a critical role in helping detectives identify and track a vehicle of interest associated with the murder investigation." That vehicle of interest may have belonged to Galvez Perez's wife, Ofelia Garcia Ortega, who is also the mother of the 14-year-old. Garcia Ortega, 36, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, and has since posted bail. Both Galvez Perez and his wife are listed as residents of "Castroville/Salinas."At a news conference, Sheriff Nieto spoke to Galvez Perez, say to the cameras, "You need to turn yourself in."Sheriff Nieto added in a statement, "Providing our detectives with effective investigative tools strengthens their ability to solve crimes and protect our communities. This case demonstrates the value of that investment. Most importantly, we cannot lose sight of Baby Angelita, an innocent child whose life was tragically lost. We remain committed to seeking justice on her behalf."Still, Galvez Perez and the teenage girl remain on the run, and their whereabouts are unknown. Galvez Perez is wanted on suspicion of incest, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, child endangerment, child concealment, and other charges.
