INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) Nearly 1 million of Hoosiers are facing food insecurity.Leaders from across state gathered Wednesday in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Evansville for the second annual Indiana Hunger Summit to share perspecti ves and solutions to strengthen the food system for all 7 million Hoosiers."Whatever the situation may be, nobody should ever feel ashamed to reach out and get help," Heidi Spahn, founder of the Indiana Hunger Summit, said. "And there are great food pantries and food banks and organizations that can provide that assistance."Experts and leaders from sectors including agriculture, business, education, healthcare and faith met to turn ideas into action to combat food insecurity."Thinking about all the way from the famers, producers to the last mile so the full value chain and what we can do together to impact food insecure people in Indiana," Spahn said.Eric Pfeiffer, president of agricultural media network Hoosier Ag Today, said, "It all starts on the farm. That is where are food is made, grown. And it starts with the farmer."Circle City Broadcasting has a partnership with Hoosier Ag Today. Pfeiffer said farmers, who play a critical role in the food chain, can have an even bigger impact in their communities."Whether it's donating off speck produce that you know the grocery stores won't take, food pantries and food banks can," Pfeiffer said. "We have farmers that are donating just 1 acre. The proceeds from one acre from their row crop system, donating that money to go toward protein, meat, for those that are food insecure in their community."From the famers who grow the food to the community partners distributing it to people in need, organizations say it takes everyone to solve hunger.Mark Hiehle with Indianapolis faith-based nonprofit Shepherd Community Center said, "There are a lot of people that care and are wanting to work together to make a difference. And so, as we do work hand in hand with each other, we can really make a difference in people's lives." ...read more read less
