One man on Long Island is on a personal crusade to what his neighbors call a “mail mess” that has gone on for decades. In the Nassau County hamlet of Glenwood Landing, residents are frustrated because they live in one of the few communities on the island that does not get mail delivered to th eir homes. “I don’t know why we don’t have mail delivery. That’s what this is about,” said resident Jeremy Barth. Barth stood outside the local post office on Wednesday urging neighbors to sign his petition and join his mission to bring home mail delivery to the roughly 1,400 homes. “If you had to drive to the post office for 10-15 minutes every day to pick up your mail, you’d be inconvenienced,” he said. For 42 years, Barth’s mail — like everyone else’s in Glenwood Landing — has been delivered to a P.O. Box in the post office. A U.S. Postal Service spokesperson said home delivery is not available because the number of homes “doesn’t meet the threshold for home delivery.” There are 18 communities on Long Island with no or partial home delivery, the USPS said. Frustration over the current system has grown in recent months. Cristina Hanan, who lives in the hamlet, said mail the post office would previously add to her P.O. Box — even though a P.O. Box address was not included — is now being returned to sender. “I didn’t get my kids bus passes in the mail,” said Hanan. “There’s things I am supposed to be getting that I haven’t been getting.” Others say the Postal Service has returned everything from bills to jury duty notices. “I don’t know what mail I haven’t gotten because it’s getting lighter every day,” said resident Virginia Vergata. In a statement, a USPS spokesperson said “policy requires the P.O. Box number to be listed on mail and packages,” and there have been increased efforts made to reinforce those requirements.
