A new professional sumo league is looking to popularize the sport outside of Japan — and it's bringing two Alamo City-area athletes to the mat. San Antonio’s Dominus Davis-Williams and New Braunfels’ Konner Kane will be among 45 international competitors vying for prize money during the Sumo C hampionship League’s (SCL) inaugural season.Davis-Williams, who trains with Mighty Eagle Sumo club locally, is the 2025-2026 US National Heavyweight Champ and a 2025 World Bronze Medalist. According to SCL, the 450-pound goliath is just as competitive with rock paper scissors as he is in the ring.At 255 pounds, Kane is the 2026 USA Light Heavyweight National Champion. SCL says he is known for his signature two-tone beard and his choice of pump-up song — “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters.“Being part of the first Sumo Championship League season is a huge opportunity," said Kane in the release. "I'm proud to represent sumo, excited to compete alongside athletes from around the world and ready to show fans the strength, discipline and heart it takes to step into the dohyō.” First announced in June, SCL has a “long-term vision of establishing professional sumo as a sustainable global sports and entertainment property.” The league was created by two entertainment vets: Stuart Snyder, a former president of WWE, and Toper Taylor, an Emmy Award-winning producer and former William Morris talent agent. Both are committed to taking the novelty out of the sport."These athletes represent far more than impressive resumes,” said Snyder in a statement. “They represent years of dedication, sacrifice and a shared belief that professional sumo deserves a global stage.”San Antonio fans who want to cheer on their hometown heroes won’t have to travel far. SCL's first tournament will take place October 10 at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park near Austin. Tickets are now available online. ...read more read less
