A Bucks County supermarket plans to begin checking its card readers every day with a device designed to detect skimmers after investigators say shoppers at the store were targeted. Investigators say a skimmer was discovered weeks ago at All Fresh Supermarket in Bristol. Bucks County District Atto rney Joe Khan said there was evidence linking an offender to the device. “In this case we have the evidence of the offender not only being caught red handed but witnesses at the store,” Khan said. Despite an arrest, store manager Cristina Torres said business dropped off after the skimmer was discovered. “People got effected very deeply,” Torres said. Now, the supermarket plans to use a device called Skimbuster to check its card readers daily. Steve Gilson of Bristol Borough-based Allied Electronics showed NBC10 Responds how the technology works. The device is inserted into or swiped through a card reader and is designed to detect abnormalities. “It reads different curvatures and things inside the reader itself so if anything is out of line it will detect that,” Gilson said. The device can detect an overlay placed on a payment terminal or a skimmer inside a card reader. A red light warns the user if an abnormality is detected. Similar checks are already being conducted elsewhere in the region. Last spring, NBC10 Responds reported on Radnor Township police using a similar device to check card readers at businesses throughout the community. Bristol Borough Police Chief Joe Moors said he is now considering purchasing a detector for his department and having officers use it as part of community policing efforts. “Here in Bristol bourough I believe I’m gunna actually purchase one of these and have our officers as a community policing detail actually go out into the community and check the devices for some of these companies,” Moors said.
