Authorities said Monday that one of two people who died after a canoeing trip in Tomales Bay over the weekend was a San Francisco resident. Casey Flynn Melia, 36, and a companion who hasn’t been identified left their campsite on the bay in a canoe just before midnight on Saturday, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Fire officials said the pair had left to view bioluminescence in Tomales Bay, a narrow ocean inlet that separates Point Reyes peninsula from the rest of Marin County. When they didn’t return the following morning to their camp at White Gulch Beach, members of their camping group alerted authorities. Melia was found unresponsive on Sunday near Hog Island, a small island in Tomales Bay. He was recovered by the National Park Service and brought to Sacramento Landing, where first responders pronounced him dead. A short time before Melia was found, a search-and-rescue operation located the other canoer unresponsive in the water and they were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and transported to Bodega Bay in Sonoma County and declared dead. The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner Bureau is leading the investigation into the person’s death. A forensic post-mortem examination and routine toxicology testing are scheduled for later this week.
