21YearOld Double Shooting Victim Dies
Aug 31, 2026
Twenty-one-year-old New Havener Garnet Beckford has died after a backyard shooting left him critically injured.
Beckford’s death was announced by the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) in a Saturday post on X.
The day before, on Aug. 28, police had posted a press release regarding a double
shooting in the West River neighborhood on Thursday, Aug. 27.
According to the press release, police responded to Judson Avenue and Mead Street at around 6:36 p.m. after receiving report of ShotSpotter activation. Dispatchers also received 911 calls about a man being shot in a backyard on Judson Avenue.
Police located Beckford, who was lying on the ground with an “apparent gunshot wound.” Police transported him to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be critical and life-threatening.
On Saturday morning, police posted that Beckford had died. Police spokesperson Christian Bruckhart confirmed that Beckford was from New Haven.
After police received reports on Thursday about the double shooting, a 24-year-old East Havener and gunshot victim arrived at Yale-New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that police said stemmed from the same incident that killed Beckford.
“The initial investigation indicates that this was not a random event and investigators are working to establish a connection between the people involved,” according to the press release.
Bruckhart declined to confirm whether or not the walk-in victim is a suspect in the homicide investigation.
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
Beckford’s death marks the city’s ninth homicide so far this year. A week before, 42-year-old Ichon Ringwood died in the West River neighborhood after a fight outside of a Derby Avenue apartment complex led to a fatal shooting.
